Here's a fun thing to do if you don't have enough nature study on your schedule. RavenStar holds nature related classes on Wednesday mornings for kids for $5 per child ($15 max per family). We're probably going to try to do one per month. This class was "All About Owls".

This ranger is an owl expert. He can imitate all different kinds of owls... very well! He read a story about owling to the kids. They were all so quiet and attentive!

We went inside and watched a slide show where we learned about the owls in our area. I got excited about "owling". It's like birding, but at night! How fun!

Then, we went back out to dissect owl pellets. These are not what comes out of their back sides. :-) Owls eat their prey whole. They cannot digest all of the bones and fur, so they regurgitate them. That's what these are. :-) It wasn't really gross. They were dry. We found quite a few interesting bones that we were able to identify on a chart. Looks like our owl have a few small rodents in his meal.
Finally, they all played a prey v. predator game.
